Blog or Website

I had this dilemma when I first started out on online ventures over four-five years back. Blogging was still new then. The dilemma grew when websites like Blogger came up. I used to write on various niche topics then which could have been a website or been presented in blogger.

I started out in website form, but soon realized that the choice between website and blog could be made only when you decide on your comfort level with the technical part of making the website. I for one is a software engineer who is otherwise comfortable with HTML, PHP etc. But still, by technical, I mean the arduous task of writing content, builiding links, interlinking webpages, etc. This is a lot of work beside plainly writing content.

But, if you want to do some real serious business out there on the internet, there is no other way out. Because, it is only the website that gives your content an authentic touch. Also, if your content involves transactions with the visitor, including getting email addresses, selling products, etc, then only a website can do it.

But my content was basically, just that. Content. So, I had to contend only with Adsense and other advertisements. That way, though I started out with a website, I soon realized that the visitors were there for my content and not for anything else. Also, I could minimize work on interlinking pages by use of a blog.

Still, I had doubts over this process and so gave it a website touch by redirecting a website domain to my blog and promoting my domain instead. But as time passed, and blogs started to get accepted as a popular form of information sharing, I have stuck to the blogs.
